As I mentioned in a previous post, a very good friend of mine is an event planner. She recently approached me about getting some new portraits done for her business. Of course I was happy to lend my skills-especially because the session was work and play wrapped into one!
It was the first time I was in charge of a solo portrait session, and it was pretty exciting. I had all these ideas and she was happy to follow my instructions. Although I’m more comfortable with the freedom the photojournalist approach gives, I was able to (for the most part) give specific direction to still maintain a natural look. Poor Dianna was very patient with me during the times where my brain was thinking, yet no words of direction were coming out!
My favorite part of each session I do is combining the ideas I had planned in my head, with the ideas that pop up in the middle of the shoot. I end up with so many more photos than I originally intended. It really goes to show that, while planning can be unbelievably helpful, you always have to remember to stick with the moment.
